A Look at Behind the Beautiful Forevers

Gabriella Carden is currently a student at Birkbeck College in London, where she is pursuing her studies in English. Outside of her academic pursuits, Gabriella Carden enjoys reading books, with a special interest in books about Asia that focus on the discrepancy in wealth between the classes.

Over the last 10 years, there have been several books written about the discrepancy in wealth in India, including Capital, the Eruption of Delhi and India Becoming. One of the most successful and illuminating of these books is Katherine Boo’s Pulitzer Prize-winner, Behind the Beautiful Forevers, a cultural portrait of one Mumbai slum, Annawadi, and the residents who are working as hard as they can to better their lives and the lives of their family members.

Katherine Boo lived in Mumbai for several years and spent time in Annawadi, slowly gaining the trust and confidence of the slum’s residents so that they began to confide in her about their lives as well as their hopes and wishes. She spent many days recording conversations and scenes she saw at the slum, summarizing them in a truly effective and moving portrait of place in Behind the Beautiful Forevers, which was published to great acclaim in 2013.
